Autumn is a wonderful time to focus on your writing project. Carve out some time for creative brainstorming or writing—a little time goes a long way, especially if you stay consistent. Think of it like a series of mini autumn retreats for working on your project—even if your retreat takes place over several 15-minute sessions throughout the coming weeks.
Grab a cozy blanket and a cup of your favorite seasonal tea. I like orange spice at this time of year. How about you? Find a picturesque nook with a beautiful autumn view, or pull up an autumn landscape photo on your computer. Put a little autumn decor in your writing nook. Then retreat to that cozy nook for short bursts of project focus as you are able.

If you haven’t started your writing project yet, you can spend that mini retreat time brainstorming topics. If you have started your project, you can brainstorm an outline for a chapter or story, or make a list of additional topics you would like to cover in your project.
If you’ve got all the outlines and lists you need for now, take an item from your outline and write some thoughts about it. Don’t worry about how the words sound or come together. Just write what comes to mind as you think about that item.

You can write long or short, but keep at it till you exhaust what you want to say about that item. The chapter or story doesn’t need to be complete. Just at a stopping point for now. You’ll be able to add more later on. The idea is to get used to writing in short bursts at a time. Then come back later and add another layer.
After you exhaust that first item on your outline, then move on to another item, and not necessarily in order. Choose whichever item draws your attention. Then repeat the process with another item from your outline.

You can create quite a foundation for your project, simply by writing what you want to say about various topics. When you come back to those parts of your outline later, you’ll already have material to work with. You can add more layers then. And you’ll have inspiration, thanks to the creativity in your mini autumn retreat sessions.
Make the most of this beautiful time of year to put inspiration on paper. You’ll be moving your project forward at an easy but steady pace. And you’ll be amazed at how the natural beauty of autumn inspires your words and creativity.
