When you’re writing about memories, it’s often easier to remember events or life moments associated with a particular season. If someone says “childhood summer,” certain images or events may come to mind. Or key words about summer may prompt a memory: school vacation, travel, recreation, friends.
Sometimes memories are good, sometimes not. Even good memories may feel fuzzy at first, where you can only recall a few details. Other memories might be as vivid as if they happened yesterday.
Whether or not your current writing project includes memories, seasonal memories make great free writing exercises.
Free writing is when you start with a writing prompt, set a timer for 10-15 minutes, and just write whatever comes to mind. No grammar, no self-editing. Full sentences aren’t necessary, and rabbit trails are encouraged. You’re just exploring your memories by writing whatever comes to mind.

Here in the midst of summer, see what comes to mind when you free write, starting with this prompt: I remember a summer when ….
Set your timer for 15 minutes and write about a favorite summer memory.
You might have one memory that comes to mind that you can describe. Or you might have a bullet list of thoughts about different summer memories.
You may start out in one direction and end up writing in another. That’s okay.
This writing is just for you. It’s a simple way to exercise your writing muscle and creativity. And it’s a great way to focus on the summer season.
Give it a try this week and free write about a favorite summer memory. Enjoy the creativity of writing, and enjoy a few minutes reflecting on the atmosphere of summer.
